Volume Loss

Volume Loss

Not only do we have gravity to contend with as we age, but also the loss of collagen and skin sagging as a result. Remain younger- looking a lot longer!

When a perfectly round scoop of ice cream starts melting down towards the bottom of the bowl, it tends to remind me of the ageing process. Use it or lose it! You have to enjoy that lovely, youthful appearance before it starts ‘melting’ down in the wrong direction, creating wrinkles and folds that are simply not attractive.

Fortunately, these days there are many ways to ‘freeze’ the ageing process and remain younger- looking a lot longer, especially when you visit your BFF at the Skin Renewal Clinic. They will remain my ‘best friend forever‘, because their up-to-date technology combined with loads of experience will keep me looking younger for a long time yet.

Volume Loss

At fortyish we start noticing that our faces are looking a lot ‘leaner’ and cheekbones are more prominent. A few years after that it is a bit more sinking and sagging as the skin loses its plumpness and volume around the cheek and eye area and it moves down toward the lower face and jawline – hence my analogy about the melting ice cream!

The declining levels of our anti ageing hormones oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone accelerate the rate at which we age internally and externally. Not only does our skin show signs of ageing with the decline of these hormones, but more importantly the risk of osteoporosis, heart disease and senile dementia increase dramatically. The Skin & Ageing webpage will describe how the health and appearance of your skin correlates with the lifestyle and dietaryhabits that you choose, as well as with critical age-related factors such as hormonal imbalance.

Lines and Wrinkles

Each time we use a facial muscle (e.g. smile, frown, eat), a groove forms beneath the surface of the skin. As skin ages and loses its elasticity, the skin stops springing back to its youthful, line-free state and these grooves become permanently etched on the face as fine lines and wrinkles.

Thus the combination of volume loss and wrinkles results in a person ‘showing their age’ as it were, and this, obviously, is what we would like to prevent. Most of us are not brave enough for the big surgery trip which includes pain, could have complications and involves time away from work, so the better way would be some non-surgical procedures, like botulinum injections and hyaluronic fillers to help those little problems disappear.

Often an ageing face is less about a softening jawline and more about losing volume higher up in the face such as around the temples, the eyebrow and cheek areas. Volume loss in the lower face and the jawline also gives an aged appearance much sooner.

Non-surgical Options

At Skin Renewal Clinics there are various rejuvenation options to consider such as the Laser Facelift with skin tightening procedures, Carboxytherapy™ or the 3D Skin Rejuvenation™ combination treatment. In addition the Liquid Facelift will have an immediate visible rejuvenating effect and consists of a combination of Dermal Fillers™ (to target volume loss and static wrinkles) with botulinum injections (to reduce the appearance of dynamic fine lines and wrinkles).

Hyaluronic Acid

The natural hyaluronic acid in the skin acts as a sponge, absorbing and retaining moisture. As one ages the body produces less which results in skin becoming dehydrated, so by replacing and adding hyaluronic acid, hydration and the thickness of the skin will improve. This is the reason why fillers consist of hyaluronic acid and are able to immediately reverse the visible signs of ageing.

The newer fillers, that are meant to fill larger volume loss areas like sunken cheeks or lost cheekbones, have advanced technology added in to extend the life of the filler up to two years. Skin Renewal also now offers a newly launched Emervelrange by Galderma.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers can also correct that hollow below the eyes and above the top of the cheek and this entails some micro injections around this area. The results are instant and can be followed up a month later with additional filler administration to ensure that those hollows are no longer visible. This kind of treatment is expected to last around two to five years, but always ensure that the doctor doing the treatment is experienced in the technique. When used correctly these injectable fillers will enhance facial volume, erase wrinkles and stimulate your own skin to increase its collagen production.

Putting the ‘apple’ back in the cheek area gives a more youthful appearance to the cheeks and the overall result is a lifting effect that counteracts the folds in the mid and lower regions, thereby ‘lifting’ the sagging skin around the jaw area as well.

What better way to start the Christmas season if you are looking and feeling great? With or without a bowl of ice cream!
